When fast-growing management consultancy Q5 decided to take a new approach to conveying what it’s like to work with them, they commissioned us to create a campaign to authentically communicate their culture.

The campaign gained over 7,000 views in its first month online, becoming Q5's most successful video to date, with over 50 experienced consultants applying directly to the firm in a single month, the most they have ever had. This shift not only indicated financial savings but also a higher quality of applicants who were better informed about the company's projects and role expectations, resulting in a more efficient recruitment process and higher acceptance rate that they had previously achieved through agencies.

Due to the success of the campaign Q5 have now stopped using recruitment agencies for experienced hires, saving them over £150,000 per year.

What we did

  • Q5 wanted to communicate what makes it special to work there and why they're different to other consultancies. So what does make them different? Rather than just guess, we commissioned a survey across their experienced consultant population, asking them about the culture and values at the company and what made it special to them. The answers we got back were more insightful and powerful than anything we and the leadership team could have thought of on our own.

  • We came up with the idea of following 3 consultants through a day in the office, illustrating the way they work and reinforcing the key messages through voiceovers.

  • The concept and key messages agreed, we developed a storyline and shot list, and scripted the voiceovers, giving the actual consultants the opportunity to shape it into their own words.

  • By any measure Q5 are an extremely successful company and growing fast, but they also like to see themselves as the underdogs in an industry dominated by giants. So the film needed to be professional and high quality, but not so polished that it lacked any character and became faceless and too corporate. We balanced the need for it to be slick and well made with being real and relatable by shooting handheld, using real staff instead of actors, and allowing for. few unscripted moments to creep in.

  • As well as filming, we also photographed the three main characters and used them to create banners for social media advertising and posters to display in the office and motivate the team.
